Habitat for Humanity of Long Island: Building Affordable Homes and Stronger Communities

Habitat for Humanity of Long Island partners with local volunteers and hard-working families to build and repair affordable housing across Suffolk County. Since its founding in 1987, the organization has delivered stability and opportunity to hundreds of households through homeownership programs, critical repairs, and community development.

In the 2023–2024 fiscal year, Habitat for Humanity of Long Island reported revenues of $4.4 million, with total expenses of $5.5 million and net assets of around $8 million. Despite a modest financial deficit, their work supported 42 new home builds, 12 home rehabilitations, and 82 critical home repairs statewide—contributing meaningfully to affordable housing progress.

Across Long Island, 40% of households spend more than 30% of their income on housing—often squeezing out essentials like food and healthcare. Habitat’s model helps close that gap: families complete 300 hours of “sweat equity,” participate in financial fitness and home-maintenance training, and receive energy-efficient, durable homes. Their program is structured to create self-reliance through homeownership, not just rental dependency.

A recent economic impact analysis found that Habitat’s investment builds local economic ripple effects—stimulating jobs, skills, civic participation, and healthier communities, not just individual homes.
